Take Control of State Compliance Risks with AbstractOps

See how leaders growing distributed companies use AI and other capabilities to take control of their state requirements.

The problem

While remote employment offers companies a nearly unlimited talent pool, the benefits often include risks, as detailed by entrepreneur Andrew Rea:

  • We encountered similar problems in figuring out our payroll registrations. Hiring remote employees forces you to register across all of those different states and filing a bunch of different types of taxes.

  • One problem is that it’s really easy to miss this fact because one might assume that Gusto, Rippling, or whatever payroll provider you pick just does that for you, but this is often not the case.

  • Also, tons of these payroll companies will make you think they do your taxes in local states — just for you to get a notice in the mail that they didn’t do a specific tax filing and now you’re paying a $2k fee to the state of New York (not speaking from experience or anything).

Sitting back and letting these scenarios happen sounds like a painful, scary way to grow a company.

At AbstractOps, we want to give leaders the ability to take control, proactively identifying and eliminating the compliance risks endemic in growing modern, distributed companies.

AbstractOps Solution: Take Control

AI Copilot

While there’s a lot of hype, we think AI is really good already at one thing: translating between structured and unstructured data.

That’s why AbstractOps Starter and Core plans include the AI Compliance Copilot, to automatically turn state notices into actionable tasks.

Say you receive a piece of snail mail to your centralized AbstractOps mailbox:

  • AbstractOps AI Copilot will analyze it and extract the relevant intel

  • If the intel is spam, it will be classified and archived to eliminate noise

  • Relevant notices will automatically be labeled, categorized, and given a priority badge to denote urgency.

The result is you'll eliminate a lot of the stress and anxiety typically felt sifting through state mailings, trying to find the signal through the noise.

Individual State Risk Assessment

AbstractOps uses a risk rules engine to translate various operating activities into requirements, and associated risks of each.

This takes into account each kind of “nexus” you have with a state. (Note: not tax advice :))

Knowing all of this allows you to prioritize where you need to take action.

Account Closures

One of the big misconceptions we often hear is “I no longer have an employee in this state, so no action is needed.”

This is not true at all. The state doesn't care if you're paying someone there or not. As long as you have an active account, you're liable for quarterly and annual filings.

To help you take control and avoid maintenance overhead and annual fees, we made it easy to de-register from a state in just a couple of clicks.

State Dashboard

While all of the rules, action items, and due dates happen at an individual state level, you need to be able to see the forest through the trees.

The AbstractOps state dashboard gives you the 50,000 foot view of all state activity, so you can understand in one glance where you’re fine, and where you need to spend time.

What users are saying

“Just being able to log in and know exactly what I need to do next to achieve or maintain compliance.

For example, if  we just made an offer to a person in Wyoming. We would have no prior presence in Wyoming.

The AbstractOps tool tells me ‘these are the things I need to do before I reach out to anybody. These are the things I need to do right after they sign or offer. These are the things and this is the timeline.’

Having that all in one place and just being able to go in and look at the status of things or know exactly what I need to do, to be able to be proactive, has been really helpful.
